Karitane is a small seaside fishing village renowned for its scenic beauty, golden beach, tranquil environment, Maori and European history. It was the location of a pre-European Maori kaik (undefended village); close by is the site of Huriawa Pa, a fortified Maori village strategically set on a rock promontory above the coast. European sealers and whalers began to arrive as early as the 1820s and a whaling station was established at Karitane in 1837. Walks along the beach and peninsula will often provide encounters with fur seals or sea lions, as well as a range of sea birds

rom the Longhouse you can access Karitane beach. Walk from Back Beach (southern end) with views of the basalt rock formations to the main beach ( approx 1 km). From here follow the road and then veer right on the paths to the Huriawa Peninsula. The Huriawa Peninsula is a 2.6km loop track Take care as the cliffs are unstable and quite high. Follow the path and you can walk to the wharf and surfing reserve from here you can walk to the Village ( have a coffee at the Karitane General Store & Kitchen.). Return to The Longhouse back via the beach or along the road. From the Longhouse to Huriawa return to Longhouse via beach is approximately a 4.6km loop track

To the keen surfer, the Dunedin coast offers uncrowded beaches with plenty of beach breaks. There is a consistent swell, white sand and clear waters. Karitane is described as Dunedin's 'big wave' spot. Take a surfing lesson on one of Karitane’s two surf breaks: the long, often hollow waves of the bar break and the legendary heavy barrels of The Point. The Point is one of Dunedin's premier big wave surfing spots – it offers extremely heavy, barrelling waves that make for some spectacular viewing

Dunedin is home to rare wildlife. On the Otago Peninsula, you can spot little blue penguins, yellow-eyed penguins, fur seals and sea lions. Taiaroa Head is the only mainland breeding colony of royal albatross in the world and you are able to experience them up close in their natural habitat right here.

Linking with the Mount Cargill Walking Track. The Organ Pipes Track features outstanding columnar jointed basalt created by the volcanic formation of the Otago Peninsula. These incredible geological pillars are well worth the walk up and make a fantastic picnic spot. Those that enjoy scrambling up small peaks will be rewarded by the Organ Pipes Track with spectacular panoramic views from both the top of the Organ Pipes and Butters Peak. The tops of these small peaks will bring into perspective the rapid floral transitions as the vegetation changes from Podocarp forest to Manuka and alpine scrub.

Tunnel Beach

This breath-taking spot is in the top 15 of places people want to visit when they come to Aotearoa . You’ll encounter views as grand as those on the Great Ocean Road in Australia or California’s Pacific Coast Highway. You could go there via St Clair Esplanade and stop for a coffee and cake, and afterwards continue along the coast southward to Brighton where ice-creams and excellent fish and chips await.
